In Hungary, March 15th is a national holiday on which Hungarians remember the Revolution of 1848 and all of the people who fought for Hungarian independence. It was one of many revolutions that occurred throughout Europe that year. The Revolution led to the War for Independence, an attempt to break free from the rule of the Austrian Empire. Leaders of the Revolution such as Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Petőfi and Jószef Bem are among the most respected national figures in Hungarian history.

Sandor Petofi: National Song

Rise up, Magyar, the country calls!
It’s ‘now or never’ what fate befalls…
Shall we live as slaves or free men?
That’s the question – choose your `Amen’!
God of Hungarians,
we swear unto Thee,
We swear unto Thee – that slaves we shall
no longer be!
