The celebration takes place each year in autumn and traditionally lasts five days with the largest celebration on the third day. This holiday is celebrated in India by all ages and traditional activates include fireworks, gift exchanges, storytelling, shopping, candle lighting and a feast.

Candles and clay lamps called diyas are lit and placed on roofs, around front doors and in windows of homes symbolizing positive life and being thankful for health, wealth, knowledge and fame.
