Initiating Dialogue Among Members of East African Diasporas

January 12, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

The East Side Freedom Library invites you to the next in a series of conversations among members of the East African diasporic community here in the Twin Cities, “What Roles Can People in the Diasporas Play in Promoting Peace and Justice in the Horn of Africa?”

Over the past thirty years, the Twin Cities has become the new home for thousands of East African immigrants. While they have been building new lives and communities here, they have remained concerned with political, economic, and social developments in the Horn of Africa— Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan. Many have loved ones there, and they pay close attention to developments. In the past year and a half, a new government in Ethiopia has reached a peace treaty with Eritrea, and has raised the expectations of members of previously discriminated against ethnic groups. The situation is both promising and uncertain.

Our new neighbors seek not only to be well-informed about these developments and helpful to their family members on the ground in East Africa, but they are also trying to figure out how they can play a positive role in promoting peace, justice, and economic stability there. The East Side Freedom Library tries to provide a space within which members of different communities can meet each other, share their stories and their hopes, and explore ways to be helpful. Their conversations are also an opportunity for other neighbors to become better informed about what is happening in the Horn of Africa and what we all can contribute to the work of freedom.

Please join us for the next conversation.
