Moroccan Pastry and Regional Arts

Alliance Française invites you to join Raja Samlali of Moroccan Flavors and Ziadi’s Mediterranean Cuisine for a presentation on artisan goods from Morocco, as well as a sampling of her handmade desserts!

This event includes a tasting and discussion of a selection of traditional Moroccan desserts prepared by Raja. These pastries showcase chocolate, spice and fresh ingredients. Raja will also discuss the fairly traded goods she sells from Moroccan vendors. This includes their regional origins. From the terra cotta pots of Marrakesh and the striking cerulean hues of art from Chefchaouen.

After completing her program at l’Institut De Technologie Hôtelière Et Touristique De El Jadida, Raja worked in various restaurants and hotels across Morocco, Qatar and the U.S. creating magnificent food, with a special love and care reserved for pastries.

In addition to co-running two Minneapolis restaurants with husband Hassan, Raja recently began working with local business owner Janet Hagen as she is transferring her business as a buyer and seller of equitably sourced Moroccan handicrafts including pottery, jewelry, argan oil and candles, among other products.

With Janet helping as well, Raja will share a bit about regional goods in Morocco. These items will also be for sale and all profits go directly to supporting Raja’s new company.
