Katha Dance Theatre presents Shaamya – Of Equality

January 5, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Inspired by the poetry of the late writer and activist Kazi Nazrul Islam, Shaamya – Of Equality is a new original dance work from Katha Dance Theatre. Through a mixture of Kathak dance, original music and poetry, it attempts to engage audiences in important discussions about the parallels between the experiences of today’s oppressed communities and those expressed by Nazrul Islam in his time.

Of Equality is choreographed by KDT Artistic Director Rita Mustaphi. Its music is composed by musician J.D. Steele and will be performed live by Steele and his ensemble to accompany KDT’s dancers. It will also feature live poetry performed by artist and playwright Ifrah Mansour.

This work-in-progress production performs at The Southern Theater on Sunday, January 5 at 2 p.m. The 40-minute production will be followed by a 20-minute Q&A session with the performers.
General admission tickets: $10, Youth 15 and under: $5, or pay what you can, available now at southerntheater.org.
