Sundays at the WDC / West African Drumming (Co-ed)

There are three co-ed West African Drumming classes on Sundays.

10:30-11:30am: West African Drumming Level-1 (Co-Ed)
11:30am-1pm: West African Drumming Level-2 (Co-Ed)
1:15-2:15pm: West African Djun Drumming (Co-ed)

West African Drumming Level-1 (Co-Ed)
Students in this ongoing co-ed class will start at the very beginning gaining insights into the rich and diverse culture of music, dance, and drumming of West Africa. As well as learning how to make the proper sounds on the djembe, students will do exercises to help their playing skills, and learn some of the common rhythms from West Africa.
Prerequisite: None
Level: Beginner to advanced beginner

West African Drumming Level-2 (Co-Ed)
Africa has a rich and diverse culture of music, dance, and drumming. In this ongoing co-ed class, we will explore the polyrhythmic patterns of West Africa and learn accompaniment rhythms, breaks, and arrangement phrases for both traditional and modern West African rhythms. You will also learn the meaning and cultural history of the rhythms, we’ll focus on different exercises to improve your playing, and explore a variety of West African hand and stick drums and drumming techniques – including djembe, djun (dunun), and small percussion.
Prerequisite: Hand Drum for Beginners, West African Drumming 1, or equivalent experience
Level: Intermediate to advanced drummers

West African Djun Drumming (Co-ed)
Add a new style to your West African drumming repertoire! Participants will learn West African djun patterns using the drums and bells to accompany traditional and modern West African songs.
Prerequisite: None
Level: Beginner to advanced
Date: Select Sundays (roughly every other week) 1:15-2:15pm
Cost: $10 per participant / per class session

Location: Women’s Drum Center
Parking on street. Please enter side door on Hampden Av. (ring WDC bell).
